The TicketBrief hub
Rome & Vatican
tickets, in one place.
Four decisions, one place to start: the Colosseum, the underground and arena, the Vatican, and free entry.
Start with the guides
Rome runs on three different booking systems, and most of the confusion comes from treating them as one: the Colosseum sells timed entry through a single official portal, the Vatican Museums sell their own ticket through their own channel, and St Peter's Basilica is free to enter, with separate paid products either side of it. Each decision on this page routes to the guide that answers it.

Quick answer: where should you start?
- You have one Colosseum morning and need the structure
- The standard 24-hour ticket covers the first and second levels. Start with Colosseum tickets: what each product includes.
- The underground or the arena floor is the specific goal
- Both are separate products, and underground access is conditional on availability. See underground and arena access, explained.
- You are comparing the Vatican Museums with St Peter's
- They are separately operated, and only one inclusion between them is stated officially. See Museums, Basilica and Dome, separated.
- You want to enter without paying
- Two mechanisms exist with different rules: a free-admission day and a legal free entitlement. See free entry at the Colosseum.
- You are fitting both sites into one trip
- Their mechanics interact more than their geography does. Read the Colosseum tickets guide and the Vatican Museums tickets guide, then sequence.

How the two booking systems differ#
| Mechanic | Colosseum | Vatican Museums |
|---|---|---|
| Booking window | Sales open 30 days before the visit, stated in days only — no release hour is published. | No advance booking window or release hour is published. |
| Entry rule | A compulsory time slot; entering at a different time from the one booked is not possible. | Valid solely on the day of issue, and tickets cannot be refunded. |
| Official channel | One official online ticketing portal, described by the operator as the official reseller. | Only tickets.museivaticani.va is the official online purchase channel, per the operator's tariff page. |
| Time managed inside | Permanence is compulsory: 75 minutes for the 24-hour product, 90 minutes for Full Experience. | No published time limit; halls must be cleared 30 minutes before closing. |
| Free access | Free-admission dates collected in person, and legal entitlements booked online. | Last Sunday of the month, children below 7 and certified disabled visitors, under published conditions. |
From the operators' own pages, read on 2026-10-05. Prices and hours are volatile and are dated on each guide; this table compares structure, not figures.
Which Rome guide should you open first?
You already know your Colosseum date and need to pick a product.
Open the Colosseum tickets guide and work through the access table.
Access level, validity and time inside decide what your morning looks like; the current price is checked on the official portal.
The underground or the arena floor is the whole reason for the trip.
Underground and arena access before anything else.
Access is set by the product you hold, and underground access is published as conditional on availability.
Your Vatican day has to include St Peter's Basilica.
Museums, Basilica and Dome, separated.
The Basilica is a separate operator with free entrance, and the Dome is the one product with a stated inclusion.
You are travelling on a budget or hold a free entitlement.
Free entry at the Colosseum plus the Museums' published free-entry conditions.
The free routes carry their own booking and collection rules, and they do not work the same way.
Mistakes that cost visitors entry or money#
- Buying from a lookalike domain. The Vatican operator publishes a warning about domains similar to the official one; check the address character by character.
- Assuming one Vatican ticket covers the Basilica. The Museums entitlement names the Museums and the Sistine Chapel only.
- Confusing validity with admission. A two-consecutive-day validity window on Full Experience products does not create an additional Colosseum entry; entry is one compulsory booked time slot.
- Arriving at a different time than the booked slot. The operator states it is not possible, and a missed slot is missed.
- Expecting the arena on the standard ticket. The 24-hour product covers the first and second levels without the arena.
Frequently asked questions#
Is there one ticket for Rome's main sites?
No. The Colosseum and the Vatican Museums are separately operated, and a Vatican Museums ticket does not include St Peter's Basilica or the Dome.
Do I need to book Colosseum tickets in advance?
Sales open 30 days before the visit date with a compulsory time slot, and the operator publishes the window in days only. How quickly a given date sells out is not published.
Can I enter the Colosseum for free?
Two routes exist: free-admission dates collected in person at the ticket offices, and a legal free entitlement such as being under 18, booked online. They follow different rules.
Is St Peter's Basilica free to enter?
Yes. Entrance is free and a reservation is not mandatory. What is paid is a guaranteed time slot, which includes the Digital Audio Guide and a dedicated entrance route.
Which Vatican ticket includes the Sistine Chapel?
The Vatican Museums ticket: the official entitlement names the Museums and the Sistine Chapel, valid solely on the day of issue.
